Oxford University’s Primate Research Facility

Oxford University’s primate research facility has been specially designed to accommodate behavioural neuroscience research involving Rhesus Macaque (Macaca mulatta) monkeys. Macaques are socially and cognitively complex animals, characteristics that make them ideal subjects for our behavioural neuroscience studies. Because of these characteristics it is really important to provide high standards of care. Their species-specific environmental enrichment program and reward-based training strategies are key to ensuring the animals are appropriately acclimatised to the staff, the laboratory environment and the research procedures. During this virtual tour you will have an opportunity to meet the staff and animals, to see the facilities and to learn about some of the studies that Oxford University carries out. CW: dHL recognizes that the topic of animal testing may be sensitive for some teachers and students. We've provided this tour to support inquires about animal testing in your classrooms. dHL's listing of this virtual does not imply an endorsement of this content or any entity this content represents.

Pompeii

Inhabited since at least 700 BCE, the ancient town of Pompeii located near modern day Naples, Italy was conquered and absorbed into the Roman empire in 80 BCE. At its height, the small city had a thriving economy based on trade and agriculture, which supported a population estimated between 10,000 to 20,000 people. The city, which featured a complex municipal water system, an amphitheatre and gymnasium was destroyed by a volcanic eruption in 79 CE. The eruption of Mount Vesuvius resulted in its burial with 4 to 6 meters of volcanic ash and pumice. While the eruption killed everyone living at Pompeii at the time, it impeccably preserved the elaborate city. Explore this famous landmark!
